Chapter 15

: Just a Phase

By the time they reached the county building, the street was lit up like Christmas. Every first responder in town had shown up, including all three of the sheriff’s patrol cars. ARS had their riot vehicle parked with black-uniformed officers leaning on the hatches from inside. Not to mention the usual assortment of ‘concerned citizens’; Belltree had a healthy militia service, and nobody was shy about showing off their air guns, spears and even a few swords.

And every one of them was swapping theories loud enough to make sure they’d sound impressive. Henry, pushed through the crowd and zeroed in on Deputy Reardon.

“Deputy,” Henry called. “I need to know—”

Summer turned, her eyes narrowing to slits. “Carter. What in the hell are you doing here?”

“What was it?” Henry replied, trying to cut through the usual foreplay. “Was if after Grant?”

“How did you… yeah it was. Tore through the council offices,” Summer said, taking a nervous glance around to see if anyone overheard. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“We know what it is… we’ve been tracking it.”

“Well you’re doing a great job,” she said acidly.

“Geezus, Summer. The town’s in danger… my job is—"

“Is cleaning up after the messy part is over!” she snapped loudly. “Leave the real work to professionals.” Summer scoffed loudly, making sure every responder nearby heard. “Why don’t you go chase raccoons in someone’s attic, Carter? You’re out of your depth.”

Henry opened his mouth to reply, but before he could, Summer grabbed his arm with the subtlety of a bulldozer. “You’re trespassing, Carter,” she said loudly, hauling him toward the street. “Let’s go.”

“What the—Summer!” Henry protested as she dragged him past the cruisers, past the officers, and all the way to the edge of the lot.

Once they were out of sight behind a parked ambulance, Henry yanked his arm free and glared at her. Summer's cop boots tapped the pavement as she nervously jiggled. Her face already set in that sharp, angry expression she liked to wear when she thought she had the upper hand.

“What the hell was that?” she snapped, her voice low but cutting. “You had to ask me in front of everyone? There were Logan's best buddies sitting right there and you want me to break ARS protocols? What were you thinking?”

Henry didn’t move. Didn’t blink. Just stared at her, his face calm, unreadable. He let the silence stretch out until it started to eat at her. Then he said, “I was thinking I needed an answer and as local law enforcement you're not rated for monster hunting. Meanwhile I'm head of a marshals service that is. Your job it to stand aside and give me any relevant information.”

“In front of the deputies?” she hissed, stepping closer. “You’ve put me in a terrible spot, Henry. Do you even care?”

He straightened, slowly, his eyes still locked on hers. “I care about the job. I care about getting things done. If that puts you in a spot, maybe you should think about who put you there in the first place.
